It's Friday morning and we're WAITING, AGAIN, for the  taxi to come to take us to the West Memphis airport to fly this last leg down to Tuskegee.  We arrive at the airport, I order the fuel and get a weather briefing, while Athina, packs and preflights "The Joybird."   I'm also chatting with a Memphis FSDO (Flight Standards District Office) guy who is gleefully demonstrating all the "aviation bells and whistles" that populate his new IPad.  He eagerly looked up the weather and airport data for me for our intended route of flight and I must say, receiving all that aviation info, literally, with just a few taps on the screen, made me want to run right out, 'dis' my Garmin 396, and join the league of IPad  owners :-).  NOT SO FAST, Ms. Parker; that "396" has taken you and "The Joybird" in and out of lots of airport destinations :-).  So, Athina and I just decided that WHEN we win the Air Race Classic, we'll each add new IPads as "necessary" equipment items to our flight bags:-).

The weather is pretty overcast at 2000 ft. but, the ceiling's high enough that we can take off and fly the route VFR.  West Memphis Airport is located under the Memphis Class B shelf, so we decided to fly due south about 10 miles, request VFR flight following east to Holly Springs, them make our way east-southeast via Tupelo, Tuscaloosa, and on into Tuskegee.  After about an hour into the flight, the weather cleared up quite nicely, and when we arrived at Tuskegee, we were so thankful for the beautiful blue skies and tailwinds all the way that got us there safely!!!...Joyce
It's 3:05 pm and we've finally made it to the Historical Moton Field Municipal Airport -- YIPPEE!!! :-).  I'm so EXCITED to participate in such an honorable and worthwhile event,  I'll just let the welcome sign speak for itself.........

Oh, and one more thing. I better let Joyce tell you all about our little (let's just call it) pre-Moton field landing... SHHHHHHHH......too FUNNY!!!! That better NOT happen during the Air Race... Athina

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot :-)).  Athina, you had to bring that up, HUH? :-).  Well, I guess we were so eager to get to Tuskegee, that I "mistook" Reese Field (41A) on the GPS for Moton Field (06A).  I mean, it was right there at my "12:0'clock" position and I even made a straight-in landing on Rwy 13 (same runway I planned to land on at Moton Field!)  But, after landing and seeing not another soul or airplane, we both were silently wondering, "what kind of podunk fly-in is this going to be that we've come all the way from Topeka for?"   I cleared the runway and taxiied down to the ramp/building where there was NO ONE/NOTHING in sight.  I looked down at my GPS, saw where the little airplane was positioned, saw where Moton Field was positioned on the map, and they were NOT in the same location :-).   I looked at Athina, who had already had her headsets off, ready to get out and go eat, and mouthed/motioned, "we are not at Tuskegee."  "WHAT!!!" she exclaimed.   I said, "This is not quite Moton Field," pointing to the 'REAL' Moton Field on the GPS and the Moton Field 'look-a-like' 10 miles west.  NO WORRIES, though;  I can always use the landing practice :-).  Anyway, we taxiied our way back to the approach end of Rwy 13, took off, and in less than 8 minutes , we were announcing our intentions to land at the 'REAL' Moton Field.  When I heard Sylvester Williams, the manager of Golden Eagle Aviation, come on the CTAF and say, "Is that you Miss Parker? "  I knew we could finally document our paperwork, "MC" - mission complete!  And I promise, I've got all those UNINTENDED landings out of my system; that WON'T happen during Air Race Classic :-)...Joyce

Hello Everybody!!!! So nice to have a couple funny stories to blog about as we're counting down the weeks 'til the race.  On Thursday,  Joyce and I were so excited to don our cute matching Team Bessie shirts (big UPs to her students for the awesome design and bright color...LUV IT!)  for our flight to The Tuskegee  Airmen Fly-In  this Memorial Day weekend. We started out with a good flight plan that would have  put us in Tuskegee, Alabama -- Moton Field Airport (06A)  around 5pm right on time for a nice dinner.
Thirty minutes out of Topeka,  Joyce does a one-eighty degree turn out of some pretty scary weather.  Good decision too! So we opted to land at Butler Airport (KBUM) located in Butler, MO.  We waited, and waited, and waited, which is normal for waiting out Mother Nature.  The fun facts about this tiny little FBO is that they run a very interesting crop dusting operation.  The people we met were so very kind and knowledgeable; they shared lots interesting facts about the crop dusting business and how lucrative it can be.   I'm thinking I might want to get a tail wheel endorsement....ASAP!  Check out the Pics.....

Even though we were "stuck/grounded" for some time waiting out the weather, we didn't let the time go to waste.  Several months ago, Athina and I decided we wanted to be like "real military pilots" for this year's race and personalize "The Joybird,"  so we purchased "our crew position and names" decals and utilized this 'wait time' to affix them  to the doors of the plane.    WOW!!! How cool do our names look on "The Joybird" :-).  A touch of class  and everybody will know just who "Team Bessie" really is :-).  Now that we have practice, in a few weeks we'll be affixing the winning race number ~"37" to "The Joybird's" tail section, so stay tuned!..Joyce
After chatting about crop dusting and watching them fly in and out, loading and unloading, and of course waiting and waiting and yes, waiting out the weather,  I knew it was time to load my rumbling tummy.  So we hopped in the courtesy car that drives in second and reverses in drive and set out for......you guessed it.... MAIN Street.   I've got to tell you, Butler, MO has some good chinese food!!! :-).  And that's coming from  me.......a real FOODIE!  It was DELISH and so inexpensive.  That place  should be on "Diners, Drive-In's and Dives."  I think I'm gonna give Guy Fieri a call :-)
Six hours later from wheels down in Butler,  full and completely satisfied, we set out for the closest point to our intended destination for a good night's rest.  Time was not on our side and we didn't want to push past the weather minimums for VFR flying at night in unfamiliar territory, so we landed at West Memphis, Arkansas (KAWM).

The airport was closed when we arrived therefore, we had to cab it over to the hotel (the airport had nice looking courtesy cars too--BUMMER!)  Anyway,  we once again waited, and waited, and waited, for the one and only ONE cab driver working the entire West Memphis area and he was so gracious to take us on the nighttime scenic tour of this 'teeming metropolis.'  As we discovered the next morning, though, what took us 15 minutes to arrive at our hotel, could have been only five minutes, had he just continued through the traffic light!!!  Oh, well, he didn't know :-).  We were so tired, almost too tired to rest.  Well, at least I was because I didn't hear a peep out of Joyce,  so I'm certain she rested well.  Good Nite!...Athina

29-Days Until the Starting Gun Sounds!!!

It's been a while since Team Bessie has posted, but, don't let that concern you.  We've been "frantically" preparing behind the scenes in anticipation of the starting gun at 08:00 am on the morning of June 21st, a mere 29 days away.  OH MY WORD!!!!, there's SO MUCH to think about and get accomplished!!!!; thank goodness for checklists! :-).  Athina has been flying lots of trips (I wish I were a flight attendant ;-)) and I'm winding down my school year -- grading papers and giving final exams with only two school days left.  Then it's full steam ahead with target "2011 Women's Air Race Classic" squarely in our sights :-).
Athina and I, along with "The Joybird" will make our debut as "Team Bessie" at the 44th Annual Memorial Day  Weekend Tuskegee Airman Fly-In, Moton Field (06A), Tuskegee, AL on Friday, 27 May 2011.  If you are attending the fly-in, please stop by and visit with us -- we'd love to share our vision, goals, and the excitement we're feeling as we embark on this fantastic air racing adventure!
Once we return on Monday, 30 May, we will be in the throes of final preparation for 2011 ARC: maintenance checkout of "The Joybird;" obtaining all the current charts and airport facility directories; ensuring every "t" is crossed and "i" is dotted on the paperwork; reviewing all the rules and regulations AGAIN; contacting VIP that will be key to our success; making hotel reservations; and mentally shifting into high gear for competitive women's air racing -- WHEW!!! :-)
So, continue to journey with "Team Bessie" and we'll be certain to keep you apprised of our progress and success as we keep our "eyes on the prize" and race towards the 2011 ARC goal line!!!...Joyce
