It is a beautiful Saturday morning and we're gearing up for the big event today at the historic Tuskegee Airmen Airport. Joyce hopped out of bed and right into uniform so quickly, I'm thinking she might have slept in that cute shirt and skirt. I've got to tell you "Team Bessie" supporters...WE LOOK GOOD!!! We are so very proud to represent you looking our BEST!!!
The excitement is so evident as we make our first debut, I believe we arrived a tad bit early, but, that's Ok, "Team Bessie" likes to be on-time. As I mentioned earlier, it is a beautiful day, but it is HOT! so I had to create my own shade while waiting for the aviation enthusiasts to arrive. Check out my instant umbrella...ella...ella...hay hay....
As fellow pilots, enthusiasts, and spectators arrived, I felt a sense of accomplishment to represent a woman that went beyond anything I can imagine in pursuit of her dream of becoming a pilot...Queen Bessie. I am so honored to take part in continuing her legacy. I cannot begin to glorify God enough for giving me the ability to share knowledge of achieving my aviation goals to others who might not think it's a possibility to even dream of flying.
The highlight of today's events included airplane rides of course. Joyce braved the heat and high density altitude in effort to not only put smiles on little girls, tweens and teens faces, but to embed in their hearts and minds encouragement of HOPE and DREAM of all things POSSIBLE!!!! To me, that's EVERYTHING! Thanks for that, Joyce.
Finally, I cannot close today's blog without honorable mention of Airport Manager, Mr. Sylvester Williams. His professionalism, warm spirit, and beautiful smile really set the tone for the entire weekend. From our arrival to our departure, we were given the red carpet treatment, and that's the norm for (ALL) who fly in and out of Moton Field Airport (06A). Mr. Williams also shared with me the lay-out of the up and coming expansion. The vision of airport ownner, Dr. Bill Winston, is beyond anything that the Tusegee Airmen could probably ever expect during their time.
The facility will include: pilot, air traffic controller training, and testing facility. But, what mostly gave me a sense of delight and peace was the information Mr. Williams shared as he pointed out the original tower and buildings where the Tuskegee Airmen trained. Knowing that people like Dr. Winston is working diligently to expand as well as preserve the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, gave me a sense of pride knowing that their services to The United States of America was not in vain. To the living legends (there are still few remaining) "Team Bessie" Thanks You!!!...Athina
