~ History of the Air Race Classic (ARC) ~
Representing 96 years of women in flight, the ARC epitomizes women's air racing that started in 1929 with the First Women's National Air Derby. Twenty pilots, including Amelia Earhart, raced the latest aviation innovations of the day from Santa Monica, CA to Cleveland, OH. Their racing set new records, helped establish women's roles in aviation, and inspired a nation.
Women's air racing has continued through the years, in particular through the All-Women's Transcontinental Air Race (AWTAR 1947-1976), and now the Air Race Classic (ARC 1977-the present). The Air Race classic has brought women's air racing into the present, flying some of the latest aviation technology, promoting women's changing roles in aviation, and inspiring young women and youth groups in the many aviation possibilities.
